Desert Gem Trails

Desert Gem Trails is a field guide to the gems and minerals of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts. The book was written by Mary Frances Strong and is approximate 80 pages in length, (copyright 1971). Hundreds of gem locations, petroglyphs and more are described in Desert Gem Trails, with maps and mileages. There is no guarantee collecting is still available. Status of collecting can change, but with the knowledge of where gemstones have been found in the past, you have a good idea where more material may be found. Also contact your local Bureau of Land Management to see where collecting for home use is permitted. The BLM has been known to give occasional field trips to rock clubs, and they may be a good source for information where you can collect rocks and common invertibrate fossils.
