Howlite slabs

Description

A slab sample of the rare howlite from Tick Canyon, CA will contain five square inches (Approx. 2 1/2 x 2 1/2″ or any combination to make five square inches. ( Stock 525s) This material was very popular back in the 60”s but hard to find today. The rough material is rounded or cauliflower shaped nodules usually with a gray exterior with small areas of white showing due to abrasions. Slabs of howlite will be snow white with black spider web veins. Some contain a small amount of golden/brown colored areas and these are nice for added contrast. Saw one web site calling this howlite, Pinto Howlite. Howlite is soft (approx. 3 1/2 in hardness) but will take dye easily and can be made to look like turquoise. Use carving tools and make some interesting patterns or art work on the slabs or make cabochons.
